Newberry College says it’s closing in on a new nickname to replace the Indians’ moniker it dropped a few years ago.

The school said this week the Newberry College Nickname Committee has narrowed its focus to a handful of choices as it looks to replace its former Indians moniker, according to Columbia, SC, television station WIS-TV.

The school is among those the NCAA said must give up its old nickname in order to compete for national championships. In 2006, Newberry folded like an old lawn chair and agreed to explore a nickname change as it hosted its first NCAA Division II football home playoff game.

Newberry has gone without a nickname since last year, removing all signs and images connected with Indians from the campus at a cost of nearly $120,000.

The school sent more than 16,000 questionnaires to alumni, students and others connected with the college, according to WIS. The committee says it will soon get final input from alumni and students before sending a recommendation to the board of trustees.

Here’s a few suggestions the Nickname Committee may want to consider:

  • The Newberry College Thin-Skinned Pantywaists;
  • The Knee-Jerk Reactionaries;
  • The Feel-Good Weenies; and
  • The Sellouts.

    I can’t see why some people don’t want their race equated to animal species like chickens, tigers, yellow jackets, wolves, and bulldogs. Next thing you know they’ll want to be released from our zoos!
